New publication from Egypt
Following the events of 30 June, Egypt’s constitution has been suspended and a new draft is under consideration by the Constituent Assembly. On 10 September 2013, Global Partners Governance and the Arab Forum for Alternatives organised a roundtable debate in Cairo to discuss the role of Parliament in the new draft constitution. Discussion focused on the development of Egypt’s legislative branch and its relationship with the Presidency and other state powers as well as Parliament’s status as the primary elected legislative institution. This report, which has been submitted to the Constituent Assembly, outlines the discussions held during the session and makes recommendations to strengthen the position of parliament within the constitution.
This report is available from our publications page and is entitled Parliament in the 2013 Draft Constitution.
