Lord Archy Kirkwood

Archy Kirkwood trained as a solicitor in Scotland before being elected to the House of Commons in 1983. He was created a Knight Bachelor in 2003 for services to Parliament and elevated to the House of Lords in 2005.

As a member of the Commons, Archy was appointed Chief Whip of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary party for the period 1992-1997, held the post of Chair of the Select Committee on Social Security from 1997-2005 and served as a member of the House of Commons Commission from 1997- 2005. He is currently the Chair of the Information Committee of the House of Lords.

Archy serves as a Trustee/Director of several organizations in the UK including the Wise Group, Centre Forum, GovNet Communications and the Institute for Fiscal studies. He is currently a lay member of the General Medical Council. Since 2008 Archy has worked with GPG on parliamentary strengthening projects in countries including Oman, Bahrain, Iraq and Egypt.
